JIAS Montreal
JIAS Montreal is a not-for-profit organization, supported by the Montreal Jewish community, whose goal is to help Jewish individuals and families settle in Quebec. Since its founding more than 85 years ago, JIAS has helped hundreds of thousands of Jewish immigrants navigate the immigration process and establish new lives in Canada. We estimate that at least 80 per cent of all Jewish immigrants and refugees arriving in Montreal have relied on JIAS for services of one kind or another.

A Jewish community with deep roots

The Montreal Jewish community is one of the largest and strongest Jewish communities in North America. It is also one of the most diverse. Its 93,000 members represent various cultural, ethnic and geographic backgrounds. About three-quarters of Montreal’s Jewish population traces its roots back to the Ashkenazi communities of Europe; about one-quarter have roots that go back to the Sephardic communities of North Africa and the Middle East.

The Montreal Jewish community was established in the second half of the 19th Century, making it one of North America’s oldest Jewish communities. As a result, it has a network of strong community and support organizations. The Jewish community’s constituent agencies fall under the umbrella of FEDERATION CJA, the central address for Jewish philanthropy and community service in Montreal.
